underrated? lost respect? Most people don't realize that in his prime he was one of the best defenders??? What are you talking about..
First off, he is not underrated, the glove is in the Hall of Fame for a reason. Just look at his accomplishments. People that know basketball know the glove is probably the best point guard defender of all time. Him or Walt Frazier are close to the best. GP is still a top 20 point guard of all time

Yeah but he is only known inside the basketball community. Unlike MJ, Kareem, Wilt, Stockton, Malone, Lebron, Steph. Certain guys have star appeal. Gary doesn't have it. So I would say he's not under rated but rather under appreciated

That's because he played in a small market and was overshadowed by the fact that he had an amazing team! During that time there were many exciting point guards in bigger markets. He played on the only team in history(at the time) to have 5 players that each scored 1000 points or more in a season! Himself included. He was very much under appreciated by the non basketball world.

This man is the reason I started watching basketball. Back in 1996, Game 5 of the NBA Finals, (we moved to Illinois, we lived in Seattle before, how ironic.) I literally am like 3 feet away from Gary at the end of the game, I don't know what to say by that point and then I became a Sonics fan. He is my favorite player of all time. This is such a late comment but he is indeed a very underrated legend, the best defensive PG ever imo. #GiveTheGloveSomeLove

They only give 99s to someone who is considered to be the absolute best at that category. So please, tell me who has better defensive consistency than him? And every single perimeter defensive category, who is better than him in NBA history?
