Russell Westbrook finished with the scoring title and the highest PER in the league.
Russ also led the league in estimated wins added and value added
He did this while also playing less minutes than James Harden.
Russ was the first point guard this century to average 10 rebounds a game.
It is true that OKC didn't win as many games as Houston but it is also true that Russell wasn't playing with the 6th man of the year and for the Coach of the Year

They always say westbrooks a "ballhog" how does he average a tripple double witha good amount of assist even if he did ball hog he is the only one on his team who will score all the time

To me I think the only reason for those ten assists is that everytime he passes the ball his teammates would shoot it and if they won't he'd call for the ball back and pass it to someone until they shoot it. For his rebounds, everytime his teammate would get the rebound he'd snatch from them in the air.

Forgot to mention that he was (by far) the worst player in the league on letting his opponent get uncontested jumpshots in the perimeter. There are several centers(!!!) in the NBA this season that contested more opponent 3pt shots than Westbrook did.
Of course that was an outcome of Westbrook's obvious struggle to stat-padd his rebounds.
Westbrook is a great athletic PG, he can get great individual stats, but a team will NEVER win a championship with a WB type player handling the ball.

People don't like this.. but this is truth. I'm not even a Russ hater at all, but this MVP will go down as a farce. There is zero question that Russ stat padded, but that's not even what I'm on about personally. To me, the biggest travesty of this season is that he hijacked the year from his teammates in order to do it.
The entire organization from Presti down to Donovan was all about catering to Russell all year, and it had an obvious effect on the team. Before the year, people were excited about what Oladipo could do. People were calling for Steven Adams MIP... once the year started, it's clear the entire team's focus was about Russ. Useful NBA players were turned into spectators so Russ could chase this MVP. If it's the job of the team leader, and especially the Point Guard, to make his teammates better, Russ failed here immensely. It's no surprise, because it's widely understood that he failed to optimize Kevin Durant for damn near a decade too.
People ask how can Russ be called selfish while averaging double digit assists.. I ask- did you actually watch games? Russ' assists are just extensions of his own play. At no point do you see Russ actually giving AGENCY to his teammates. Giving them the ball, and letting them go to work. Giving them the ball in THEIR best spots. Russ just creates for himself, and then passes into obvious assist situations that he creates. I'm not knocking that. It's an effective playstyle.. but it's FAR from selfless, even with the assists. And to my larger point, it doesn't help anyone actually get better.
This is the reason WHY OKC was so abysmal when Russ sat, or when Russ failed to dominate the box score. The rest of the team was forced to play a style that was completely reliant on Russell doing everything. Russell got his numbers, and he got his MVP, but the Thunder were not as good as they could/should have been last year. They may have even won more games than they would have if they had played a more team oriented game, but by the time playoffs came, and it really mattered, the team as a whole would have been better off if they had been allowed to behave like real NBA players all year, instead of cheerleaders that would box out for Russ to get boards.
The problem is, I don't think Russ understands this.. or at least.. he can't help himself. If he sees an opportunity to take something upon himself, he takes it. He doesn't seem to understand the value in letting Oladipo try to create for himself, even if it doesn't work. He doesn't see the value in letting Adams grab a few boards just to feel engaged. Apparently the fans and basketball writers don't see this either.
To me, Kawhi and Harden had obviously better seasons than Russ, from any real basketball perspective. Russ has the narrative (via KD and Oscar) and the gaudy numbers, but he didn't actually bring VALUE to his team. He got the most wins he saw as available, at whatever cost to his teammates. That will be his legacy when it's all said and done. Failed to optimize a Top 3 player for 8 years.. then hijacked an entire organization, and at least one season (maybe entire careers) from otherwise capable NBA players.

I think those are valid points. However, to say "this MVP will go down as a farce" is probably incorrect in the sense that the people voting for MVP are rarely taking a holistic view of the value players bring to teams. I'm not saying the MVP is necessarily wrong each year, but the process of choosing an MVP is mostly driven by narrative and box score numbers.

A triple double is a triple double. Even if he stat pads (which he does a little bit) IT IS STILL A TRIPLE DOUBLE. The stats are the same. A triple double still means that he passed into a made shot 10 TIMES. He still scored a least ten points. He still went in and grabbed a board 10 TIMES a game. You cannot discredit him. Not just any player in the league could go out and do that. And Russell shouldn't look to let Oladipo create for himself because he can't. Russ is the best player on his team and he knows that and acts accordingly. And Russell did bring value to his team. I mean he took a team that would not make the playoffs and be one of the worst teams in the west and brought them to the playoffs in a good seed. And you say that he didn't bring value to his team?! It would be diffferent if he averaged 30 10 and 2. But he didn't get 2 assists. He was able to find the open teammate roughly 10 times a game. And remember when KD was on his team. If there was another superstar he would not be as ball-dominant. He still would be the 1rst option unless a guy like KD, or Lebron came, but if he was the 1rst option he would have to share the ball with a superstar and would put up similar numbers as he did pre-Warriors KD. So in conclusion you cannot say that this MVP will go down as a farce or undeserved MVP, because IT WILL NOT. People will look at the stats and say, "Wow this man was a stud, grabbing rebounds, getting open looks for his team, and scoring!" So there is honestly no way to say "Russ did not deserve his MVP."

People who understand the game will know that a triple double is a triple double. They will know that his teammates could not create shots and that Westbrook was relied upon to take the majority of the shots, and if he had to force them that is better than having his less than average teammates taking them. Westbrook carried a team to the playoffs that without him would be one of the worst teams in the west. He deserved MVP this year because of this

I'm just gonna go out and say kawhi is better than both harden and westbrook. Westbrook and harden go out and score 30 a game and maybe dish out 10 assists however the best player on the other team does the same and it cancels out. Kawhi leonard scores 25 and usually locks down the best player from the other team thus kawhi actually gives an advantage not just cancelling out the best player(s) from the other team.

Without Westbrook, the Thunder would be the Nets of the East but worse.
Without Harden, the Rockets would probably be 7th or 8th seed in the playoffs.
I may be wrong about this, but:
The Rockets have a big system built on 3s and up-tempo offense where Harden fits right in.
The Thunder have a system built on Westbrook and the players have individual playing styles so Westbrook can do virtually anything; Oladipo, who can drive and rest Westbrook by playing the 1, Kanter and Gibson, who allow Westbrook to bring the ball to the post, and Adams, who helps A LOT in the post on d are just some examples of where they fit in
Enough said.

The Rockets without James Harden would be just as bad as the Thunder without Westbrook. The entire Rockets offense is contingent upon Harden, just like the Thunder's offense. Both would be at the bottom of the league without their star player. The difference is Harden won 8 more games

Don't forget Russ shot 42 percent from the field. He got some fifty and forty point games this season and most he missed most of his shots shooting less than fifty. I remember against phoenix he shot 37 percent from the field when getting 50 points

Harden averaged over 8 and had the 3rd highest shot contests among guards so he couldn't have played for them. James Harden also didn't ball hog 94% of the time (actual stat). But even tho Westbrook didn't help his team as much as Harden, Kawhi, Lebron did, he still won it just coz of Media hype.

James Harden accounted for more points than RW did. In fact, he now holds the all-time record for most points accounted for in NBA HISTORY.
True, but those stats aren't always reliable. Look at the lists and see how some players, i.e. LeBron, aren't ranked as they should be.
Minutes don't matter too much, plus RW sat out the last game of the year.
When 7 of his rebounds per game are uncontested, this stat is meaningless.
Six man of the year I will give you that, but D'antoni bounced around the league for years. Only when he had a good enough player to execute what he wanted did he receive recognition. Before the season started, nobody would have said that Harden had better teammates. Eric Gordon and Ryan Anderson both were average in New Orleans, but excelled with a teammate like Harden. Ariza and Capela are both role players, and Lou Williams can score well, and that's pretty much it. Oladipo and Adams were both considered to be "better" than any of Harden's teammates at the beginning of the year. Gibson and Kanter both are very capable big men, and Roberson is a solid defender.

Harden also hold 6.4 uncontested rebounds, so his rebounds are pointless aswell, going by your logic. And D'Antoni ran one of the best offenses of all time with the Phoenix suns, he's a top 3 offensive coach of all time easily. Eric Gordon and Ryan Anderson were both better in NO. And those stats are good, LeBron isnt ranked as he should be because he doesnt go all out in the regular season, check his post season EWA, he clearly kills everoyne in that aspect, and thats where he is at his best.

Russell Westbrook also shattered the league record in usage percentage. He begged Adams and Kanter to let him grab rebounds, so becoming the first guard to average 10 rebounds is irrelevant. Harden has the edge in FG%, TS%, and Effective FG%. All of those advanced metrics are based off stats that came as a result of Westbrook's insane usage percentage. Gordon and D'antoni won their awards because of Harden. Harden's success was not because of them. The Thunder were supposed to be better than the Rockets in almost every preseason prediction, yet the opposite happened. Harden deserves the award way more than Westbrook does

Value added and estimated wins added are the exact same thing. EWA is just VA/30. And both are based on PER, which is based off an accumulation of stats. Stats that Westbrook accrues by having the highest usage percentage in league history. Usage percentage isn't necessarily a bad thing, but when you're usage percentage is incredibly high and your team still fails, something is wrong. Sure, D'antoni's system gave Harden a system where he could strive, but if you put Westbrook in that system, there's no way his team would win as many games as Harden's did.

I wouldn't say Harden's is incredibly high. Its above average, but it doesn't even matter because in Harden's case it helps his team win games. As far as the bench goes, the Rockets only use three bench players, so they aren't very deep. Lou Williams was on the team for less than half the season as well. I do agree that Westbrook has one of the worst benches, but he still has good scorers alongside him like Oladipo and Kanter, neither of which improved much from last year

Oladipo isn't consistent and Kanter is a black hole on defense, probably the worst defending center currently. Yes, both deserved it. But Westbrook didnt have Mike D'Antoni, who's one of the best offensive coaches ever. Eric Gordon, whos a great shooter and who won 6th man of the year.

Let me rephrase from my earlier post.
James Harden did have a better individual season, but the main reason Curry won his MVPs was like Steve Nash did a decade earlier Curry revolutionized basketball.
Without Curry the NBA would be much more different today, before Steph came along it wasn't common to see people chucking up contested off the dribble threes and actually making them. Since Curry's MVPs teams are going all in on three point shooting. Guys like Eric Gordon, CJ Mccollum and Klay Thompson have gone from fringe pieces to household names. in a few seasons. In Lebrons Miami team he didn't really have any 'laser' 3 pt shooters apart from Ray Allen. Now he's surrounded by them.
Harden was the better player in 2015, like Kobe was the better player in 2006, But the Most Valuable Player to basketball? I'd take Curry and Nash any day.

There is only 1 laser 3pt shooter on the Cavs and that is Korver. Frye is pretty decent, but 'Laser' would be an overstatement.
CJ can also put the ball on the floor and drive. He is far from a one-trick pony. And the Warriors were so fixed on Klay that they wouldn't trade him (with David Lee who was already in his 30s, struggling with injuries and showing a decline) for Kevin Love, when Kevin Love was the best (or top 2) PF in the league. So he was alrady a huge commodity even before the championship and Curry's MVP.
Maybe Curry deserved it over Harden, but "revolutionized basketball" would a bit of a stretch.

What im saying is look around you. Teams are attempting record numbers of threes. Almost every team has a specialist 3 pt shooter.
When kids walk into training all they wanna do is be like curry. And shoot the three ball, its a massive downside if a college player cant shoot.
Even centers such as demarcus cousins and anthony davis (possibly dwight howard lol) are adding three pointers to their games to be more effective.

This is not only an oversimplification but just plain wrong. Harden had BARELY better stats at best when you look at the whole picture in 2015, and his team had 54 wins- the Warriors had 67. The Rockets were not that good in 2015, and players on "not that good teams" should NEVER win the MVP. The only reason Westbrook did it was because he averaged a triple double. This year, if the Rockets were #2 seed instead of #3, Harden might have won. #3 seed and below pretty much locks in no MVP unless you're by far and away the clear MVP. If record is really what matters- and it plays a huge role- Harden should not have won this year either, it should have been Kawhi (who I thought should win).

That same season Wilt Averaged over 50 points per game and he didn't win it. Bill Russell won it because he made his team better and he made them a championship team.
