literally the only thing he was really good at defensively (excluding rebounding) was getting steals lmao yet he gets 90+ defense with a 63 steal rating

Magic is a versatile defender could defend all potions at a elite level from the 3-5 in his day and had his disadvantages against small guys because they are so much quicker given that he was 6'9. Don't judge him against PG just because you run the position doesn't mean you need to defend it he was excellent against bigger guys worse against smaller ones he was kinda like Bird great for help, defending bigger guys and wasn't quick enough to defend smaller guys albeit a little worse than Bird. Remember in the finals when he held Dawkins to 14 and dropped 42.

I mean he pretty much couldn't guard any guard who was even a pretty good scorer. He pretty much always took on some of the weaker assignments

Not really he never guarded guards always forwards because of his height, they let other players guard the quicker points because of his height actually being a disadvantage in the situation

There have been tall players with the ability to lock down shifty point guards. It was more due to Magic's lack of lateral quickness. Even guys like Kenny Smith repeatedly exposed him when put in a 1 on 1 matchup

Your right, my point still stands though if Magic kept his athleticism from his earlier years he could of been able to guard PGs more effectively

Elite is a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge stretch. Magic could hold up against forwards and some less polished centers, but he was by no means any kind of lockdown defender. He was definitely regarded as roughly an average to above average defender. He wasn't really great for help, he was good, but to compare his defensive instincts and ability to Bird's is laughable. His best defensive uses were jumping passing lanes and rebounding, he wasn't particularly good at anything defensively outside of that. And holding Dawkins to 14 points on 6-9 from the field, considering Dawkins averaged 14 PPG that season.
Him having a rating over about an 85 in any defensive attribute other than steal and pass perception is pretty ludicrous to me. He should have around a 75-80 defense with a 90+ steal

He was great at help defense his pass lane jumping as you said was elite same with his pass perception he took away the post from any guard but like I said couldn't guard quick quards 1v1 at a elite level I compared him to bird in the way he played defense they both were great at help couldn't do 1v1 because he wasn't fast enough to keep up with those guards same with Bird. I said that he was worse than Bird cause he was but lets get this straight Magic was by no means meant to guard guards he was a PF playing the guard position because of his passing skills.

Magic couldn't guard any particular area at an elite level - he could guard some at a good not great level. The two areas he shined were passing lanes and rebounding, but that's about it. Magic was never gonna really slow down a star at any position. The Lakers generally assigned him to the other team's worst scorer outside of the center spot
